Earning a Living Crafting at Home – Is It Possible?

By Melissa Price Making crafts at home can be both fun and rewarding, I know many stay at home moms that make a nice part-time income off the crafts that they make. I think its possible and have succeeded in earning a full time income off crafting. When I was on bed rest while pregnant with my son, I had nothing more to do then craft. So I started of thinking of ideas to turn it into profit. Keys to turning a profit are: Deciding what type of products to make Pricing the products for maximum profits Finding the right selling avenues These are not all of the things to think about, but some of the most critical. You will need to figure out along the way what works best for you of course. Finding items that take little time, little money to make and can make a good profit is the hard part. Thats one of the worst things about trying to sell handmade items. Few appreciate the hard work involved in making them, and very few are willing to pay enough for our items for us to show a nice profit. When counting on your craft items to pay your bills, you must consider several factors when deciding what types of items to make. First you need to make sure that your item will bring a good profit. If you spend 10 hours making something and it only brings $5 in profits, then you have done nothing but waste time and money on something that will not help you make money. On the other hand, if you spend 10 hours making 10 items that bring you $10 per item then you are doing much better at earning enough to pay your bills. Making a decision on what product to make should be thought out, you dont want to rush yourself and end up losing money in the end. When making your choice, you would first want to consider the cost of the materials, you can make cut backs or changes to make sure the project still looks good but costs the least amount of money to make. This will help ensure you a larger profit; you dont have to cut quality just to make a wonderful project. Make sure you focus first on the quality of your products themselves and dont base your decisions thinking that the higher the cost of materials, the more people will be willing to pay for the product because this isnt so. You will also need to consider the amount of time is involved in making your items. If youre selling at craft shows, then you will need to ensure that you have plenty of merchandise to stock your booth, and that you can quickly restock again when you sell a lot. One thing I have done in the past is make sure I have items that are fairly simple to make, and that I can work on while I am at the show. This helps with the slow times and also builds your inventory. Dont do something that maybe you have developed a special trick for though; you wouldnt want other learning your secrets. Make sure for those items they would have to purchase from you if they like it and not just replicate it. When selling at craft shows, one must ALWAYS make sure they provide some nice dollar items for children because there are usually thousands of children at the shows whose parents give them a dollar or two to spend in any way that they like, and the children do enjoy picking out their own toys. Sadly there are few crafters that take this into consideration when creating their products for their shows. They cater to the adults (usually the women) and forget that children want to smile too. RECAP: Focus on quality because high quality should always be your first consideration. Just because material may cost more doesnt mean you should use it every time. Provide a nice selection of products instead of just a few items. Make sure you offer several products that are super fast to make in case you need something to restock your booths quickly. Include cheap items that children can afford. This is just a beginning on the many different tips and tricks you can learn to become successful at craft shows. Did You Know That When We Say ‘Yes’, We Are Also Saying ‘No’?

By Dan Ohler Holy cow – life can be hectic. We make lighting-fast decisions about how we will use our precious time some with great thought and some without much consideration for the consequences. Many of us have received requests/demands like these. “Could you stick around and help finish this project? It wont take long.”"You cant leave now. Were almost done.”"This is really important to us and youre the best person for the task. Will you please take this on?”Or have you had incongruent conversations in your own mind like these? “I need to get this done. Ill just skip lunch.”"He/She wont mind if Im a bit late. Theyll understand that my work is important.”"Its an important hockey game on TV. Im sure our guests wont mind if I slip away for a few hours.”"Sometimes I forget about family things, but I never forget important meetings.”Now lets step away from these scenarios and look at what is occurring at a more basic level so we can evaluate the duality of our choices. In grade school, I remember learning about electricity lights were on or off. Later on, in math class, it was a binomial system 0 or 1. It seems so simple, and this duality is the basis of modern technology. We live our lives by a similar system. We use a bi-choice system yes or no. But we complicate this because we are human beings. We have a secondary system called emotions. Emotions are what give life passion, purpose, and vitality, or the opposites, which are apathy, despondency, and lethargy. Any time we choose yes we are also choosing no to something else. And the emotional message resulting from this simple choice may have a fantastic, or devastating long-term result. What may seem purposeful to me may deliver a message of apathy or rejection to someone with whom I have a relationship. Heres how it works. I remember many times saying yes to a little more work, rather than: cuddling and communicating with my wife, Carol playing a game with my sons, Jamie and Brad going for a run or ski through the forest taking the day to visit family or friendsThese choices meant I was saying no to my wife, my children, myself, and other important relationships. The emotional message I was giving myself was that my work was more important than my relationships with my wife, children, friends, relatives, and with myself. And the emotional message I was giving others was that they werent important to me. Yes I had time for work but no time for them. It was easy for me to choose this habit, because there was always more work to do. When I look back on it, I also began justifying this in my mind as being OK. If I work really hard for a few more hours (or days, weeks, years), then Ill have lots of time for those people. Boy, Im going to be happy and successful then! But it didnt take long until the relationships became very emotionally and physically drained and challenged. My personality style was such that if something wasnt going well, I would remove myself from it and expect that it would sort itself out on its own. This stick-my-head-in-the-sand approach (picture that head down and you-know-what up) meant that sooner or later, the part of my body that was in the air was going to get a swift kick. And it hurt physically and emotionally. Ive learned to be consciously aware that when I choose yes to one thing, I am always choosing no to something else. And if you evaluate your life, exactly the same applies to you. My challenge for you this time, if you choose to accept, is very basic, yet the effects may be immense. Consciously evaluate every choice you make. When you choose yes, what are you saying no to?With the annual festive season upon us, we have many opportunities to practice this. Consider the following: If I say yes to getting caught up in the materialistic buying frenzy, am I saying no to feelings of financial peace and contentment in the New Year? If I say yes to a few extra hours of work, am I saying no to a fun social gathering with co-workers and friends? If I say yes to an extra helping or two of dessert, am I saying no to my promise to myself to eat sensibly? If I say yes to another drink (or two or six), am I saying no to feeling energized and rested in the morning? My point is not to tell you what choice to make. The challenge is to make these choices consciously, aware that each yes is also a no. And ultimately, your choice affects your relationships with self and others at an emotional level. I encourage you to slow down, take time for yourself, family, and friends. Savor the magic of the season. Reflect on, and celebrate, a year of learning, growth, and success. Yes, celebrate!! Eat, drink, and be merry, aware that you own every result and feeling you get. From my family to yours, I wish you a season and a new year filled with abundance, love, peace, and fun. That sounds like success to me. Ho, Ho, Ho and away we go! See you next year. Copyright 2006 Dan Ohler is Thinkin Outside The Barn! Food – Tips On Properly Storing Food

By Michael Russell Keeping your foods properly stored in the cabinet or refrigerator is something that should be taken seriously. Not only will storing your food correctly make it last longer, but it can also keep you healthier. Improperly storing foods can lead to harmful bacteria and spoilage. Let’s take a look at a few helpful tips to keep your foods fresh and lasting longer. Vegetables Keep your vegetables stored in the food crisper in your refrigerator. You can put all your vegetables in there except for tomatoes, onions, potatoes and garlic. Keep your potatoes, onions and garlic in dark place, or even in a paper bag, but not the refrigerator. You should keep your vegetables in plastic bags to hold their moisture and nutrients. You will also put tomatoes in a plastic bag after cutting them. Fruits Most people think they should leave apples sitting out on the table in a fruit bowl, but the truth is, they should be stored in the refrigerator. All types of berries should also be stored in the refrigerator. One fruit that should never be put in the refrigerator though is a banana. It will immediately turn black. Not a pretty sight. Melons, including watermelons, should be stored at regular room temperature until they become ripened. Once ripe they should then be stored in the refrigerator. The same can be said for grapes. Other citrus type fruits can be left outside at room temperature or kept in the refrigerator. It doesn’t really matter with these fruits. Frozen Foods When freezing leftover foods, be sure to put them in an airtight container, or Ziploc bag to maintain freshness. If you don’t, you will have ice crystals form and your foods will be freezer burnt. Meats, chicken and pork can also be put in the freezer to keep. Be sure you do not re-freeze these foods after thawing them out. You must use them after thawing, or throw them out. Milk And Dairy Items Naturally you will always store milk in the refrigerator, but be sure to keep an eye on the expiration date. Throw it out after the expiration date. Another good tip is to buy milk from the store with an expiration date well into the future. Look for gallon containers in the rear of the dairy shelves in the grocery store. They will have the latest expiration dates. It is also a good idea to check expiration dates on all your dairy items at least once a week. This includes eggs also. Meats Always keep fish, meats, chicken and pork in the refrigerator until you prepare them for eating. You want to make sure you keep these items wrapped and away from other foods in your refrigerator to prevent bacteria and keep them from contaminating other foods. One important tip to keep in mind is that fish should be eaten within two days of purchase. Other Items Keep your canned foods in a pantry that is cool and dark. This includes cereals, oils, breads and pasta. Food storage certainly is not difficult, but it does require a little bit of attention on your part. By properly storing your foods you will keep your foods lasting longer and your family will stay healthier. Alternative Strategies For Treating Fibromyalgia

By Toni Narins, L.Ac. Fibromyalgia (FM or FMS) affects between 3 to 6% of the general population, with females being affected 9:1 over males. While the disease isnt usually life threatening, its various symptoms can be distressing at best, and debilitating at worst. The primary symptom associated with fibromyalgia is pain. Pain can be general or specific, is found primarily in the muscle fibers, and sometimes the joints. The pain can be experienced as heightened sensitivity to light touch, or it can be tingly, achy, spasmodic, and can also include muscle weakness. Unfortunately, there are no objective markers for fibromyalgia – no blood or urine tests which would give a definitive diagnosis. So physicians must diagnose according to symptoms, and must also differentiate fibromyalgia from other rheumatic disorders, such as polymyalgia rheumatica. Since fibromyalgia is often called a syndrome, there are other possible clusters of symptoms associated with it, other than pain. One of the most common is chronic fatigue. Sleep disturbances and the inability to reach deep REM stage sleep are also common. Many patients report what they call brain fog – the inability to concentrate or focus for any length of time, and/or the inability to multi-task. Many doctors believe that there is a psychosomatic or psychogenic cause of fibromyalgia. There are studies which suggest that over 50% of fibromyalgia patients suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder. (1) As a result, western medical drug therapy focuses on treating the symptoms of fibromyalgia, usually with a combination of drugs: anti-depressants, pain relievers and a variety of sleep aids. Another theory which has gained popularity is that fibromyalgia involves abnormal deposits of phosphorous and calcium in the cells of the body. Diagnosis of fibromyalgia by adherents to this theory involves something called mapping, in which various areas of the body are palpated to detect lumps and spasms. This is different than detecting trigger points, which has been a basis of diagnosis doctors have used for many years. The treatment protocol for those who follow this theory is guaifenesin, which is an ingredient in some decongestants. Those who follow the guaifenesin protocol are advised to not ingest any form of salicylic acid in medications, on the skin, or of unknown origin, meaning herbal remedies. Many people today shy away from drug therapy altogether for a variety of reasons, and many more are becoming wary of taking combinations of drugs. For those people who do not wish to take combinations of drugs, or follow the guaifenesin protocol, there is another alternative: Chinese medicine. Acupuncture and herbal remedies have been alleviating pain, aiding sleep, and aiding in mental alertness for centuries. In Chinese medicine, pain equals stagnation. In normal physiology, energy flows to all parts of the body evenly and smoothly, following a prescribed course. When there is pain, it means that something has impeded the flow of energy. There are several possible reasons for this. One possibility is that there isnt enough energy, so the normal flow – which should resemble that of a healthy stream – is reduced to a mere trickle. Patients in this case will often report fatigue, weakness in the limbs, headaches, perhaps a feeling of coldness in the limbs and brain fog. For these patients, a close look at dietary factors is important, as well as herbal therapy. Other patients will report conditions such as interstitial cystitis, muscle spasms and nerve pain as well as muscle pain. These people might report feeling hot and irritable. They, too, can experience headaches, but they will be different from those in the first group. A qualified practitioner of acupuncture, herbs and Chinese medicine should be able to distinguish those differences and be able to prescribe the appropriate therapy. Also, it is important for the fibromyalgia patient who is taking a prescription medicine to report this to their acupuncturist/herbalist. A well-trained practitioner will be able to write an herbal prescription and give directions for use which will not interfere with, or cause any interactions with a western medical prescription. Toni Narins, L.Ac. is a licensed acupuncturist and herbalist in San Diego, CA. She maintains a busy clinical practice in Mission Valley, treating women with fibromyalgia, insomnia, chronic fatigue, arthritis, menstrual problems, menopausal symptoms and a wide variety of pain. Aside from acupuncture and herbs, she addresses her patient’s diet, exercise, and lifestyle. Nail Fungus Medications

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Paolo_Basauri] Paolo Basauri Fortunately, nail fungus medications are something you can easily find today. But in other times, the only viable treatment for nail fungus was surgical removal, a rather tricky procedure. Nail fungus medications are recommended by doctors after a proper diagnosis, and comes in two types: oral and topical. These medications are part of long treatments because nail fungus is not something you can get rid of overnight. Oral Treatment Oral nail fungus medications are the best option in terms of effectiveness. It works as an internal process. Intake of the dose is mostly daily, depending on what the doctor recommends. Oral nail fungus medications include Itraconazole (Sopranox), Fluconazole (Diflucan), Terminafine (Lamisil. These medications are taken between 3 months but it takes several months to a year to fully heal the nail for the fungus and prevent it from reappearing. Other oral medicines like Griseofulvin and Nizoral can take up to 18 months for the full treatment. These type of nail fungus medications help a new nail grow. These new nail is free of any fungal agent in it. Our nails act as a powerful barrier to nail fungus but once the fungus is in, the barrier has the some power but against us. Of all these medications, doctors mostly recommend Fluconazole. A medicine developed as a result of AIDS research. Topical Treatment Topical nail fungus medications are recommended as a complimentary aid to oral treatment. They can help when directed appropriately. These creams are applied directly on the nail. By itself they have little power and is very hard your nail will be fully healed with topical creams. Topical creams use special chemicals and ingredients that help pass through the nail and reach the fungus. Remember that this information is just for you to know the available nail fungus medications. You must not take any medicine without consulting with your physician first. Many of these medications have side effects, such as nausea, diarrhea, rashes and liver enzyme abnormalities. So please, be careful. There’s No Such Thing as a Free Ringtone!

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Emily_Sims]Emily Sims There is nothing worse than being duped. Not only do you feel like an idiot, you are left to pay for an item or service you dont want. The latest scam is the ringtone subscription service. Companies advertising free ringtone downloads, targeted at teenagers, have caught many users in expensive subscription clubs. The con is simple: Aggressively market your product as free, wait until a user enters their mobile number to access the free download, then send the user 30 ringtones a month at a cost of 5 USD per ringtone. Premium SMS subscription services, like ringtone clubs allow mobile phones to be used like credit cards. Legality is addressed in the terms and conditions agreement, a small box on the subscription form that must be ticked before processing. Written in practically illegible 9pt sans serif text, terms and conditions usually pop up in a small window which must then be maximised. Typically, the word subscription and service pricing appear only in the terms and conditions. For example: By clicking the COMPLETE button you agree to subscribe to Any Club’s ringtone service. You will be sent your choice of ringtone FREE of charge as a bonus for joining Any Club. The service allows you to download up to 4 ringtones each week. The US$4.95 charge will be billed to your mobile bill twice per week. To stop this subscription service at any time, SMS STOP, to short code 77777777. Your phone must be polyphonic compatible, be Internet-enabled and have text messaging capability. You must be the owner of this device and either be at least sixteen years old or have the permission of your parent or guardian. Artist names used for identification purposes only. Standard text messaging rates apply. For help contact customer service at 1-123-456-789. This standard terms and conditions script can be found at any ringtone website purporting to provide free content. In practice, terms and conditions protect the ringtone supplier, once the box is checked the customer can be said to have recognised the stipulations of the agreement. Thus the blame is conveniently shifted from the ringtone supplier, to the customer. The customer, it is claimed, should have read the terms despite being (mis)led to the website on the pretense of free content. Recently, thanks to a spate of consumer complaints, several ringtone providers have been forced to change their advertising policy. In the UK complaints of misleading advertising against ringtone company Jamster! have been upheld by the Advertising Standards Authority. In the US a lawsuit has been brought against Jamster!, accusing the Crazy Frog proprietors of fraud, false advertising, unfair business practices. Legal action may result in greater transparency on behalf of operators like Jamster! However, consumers should recall the cliche theres no such thing as a free lunch, and be highly suspicious of any website offering free mobile content. How to Care for Your Silver

By Martin Swinton Silver is beautiful but it can tarnish quickly. This sometimes puts people off collecting it. Dont let it deter you. Here are some tips to help you enjoy your silver. Use it. Regular use is best. Silver was made to be used. Wash in hot mild soapy water. To avoid spotting, wash quickly in hot mild soapy water, rinse in hot clean water and dry quickly. Avoid contact with scotch tape, cardboard and newspaper. Acids in the tape, cardboard and newspaper can be harmful to silver. Use acid-free paper. Wrap silver in acid free paper when storing. Avoid contact with eggs, onions and peas. The sulfur in these foods combines with silver to form silver sulphide, which discolors the surface. Avoid contact with wool and felt. These fabrics contain harmful sulfur. Avoid contact with rubber. Dont fasten cutlery with rubber bands or store rubber bands in silver cups etc because rubber contains ingredients that can tarnish silver. This includes latex gloves. Dont wear them when cleaning your silver. Avoid dishwashers. The combination of harsh detergents and very high temperatures is far too much for sterling to bear. Avoid salt. Remove salt from silver saltshakers and salt sellers after each use. Salt is a corrosive element. Storing these items with salt in them will damage them along with the rest of the silver in the cupboard because salt will permeate the air. Clean silver candlesticks carefully. Avoid using a knife or other sharp object to remove the nub of a candle. Instead, pour in a little hot water. Let it sit and then the remainder of the candle will slip out. Dont store silver in freshly painted drawers. Some paints can accelerate tarnishing. You should wait 4 months. Cleaning your silver Here are a couple of methods to clean your silver. Commercial cleaners. A wide assortment of commercial cleaners is available at grocery and hardware stores. The less abrasive the cleaner, the better. Aluminum foil method This fast working homemade remedy works like a charm. Add to pot of boiling water a piece of aluminum foil, salt or a water softener such as Calgon. The chemical reaction among these elements quickly lifts tarnish. Works well for cutlery, trays etc. Toothpaste An old standby that works in a pinch. Apply with a soft toothbrush. Remove with soft clean cloth. Storing your silver A humid environment encourages tarnishing. Caustic elements such as sulfur and salt cause tarnishing and pitting. Using one and/or more of these techniques will help to create a barrier between your precious silver and that pesky tarnish. Anti-tarnish strips Can be added to drawers where silver is stored. These strips, containing activated charcoal absorb tarnish producing gases. Kenzied cloth Line your drawers with this 100 per cent cotton per cent cotton flannel cloth. When used in combination with anti-tarnish strips, they provide a good barrier. Polyethylene bags Store silver pieces in polyethylene bags that create a barrier from tarnish producing gases. Desiccated silica gel & activated charcoal Add to storage area a small container of desiccated silica gel that absorbs water to keep humidity levels low and a small container of activated charcoal. This one-two combination packs a punch and absorbs harmful gases. Works well when added to polyethylene bag. 10 Philippine Herbal Medicines Endorsed by the Department of Health

By Arnold Alvarez Herbal medicine is the use of leaves, barks, roots and flowers of plants for the treatment or prevention of ailments or the promotion of good health. Like China, the Philippines is another country long known for using herbal medicines long before its popularity in the west. In recent years, medical researchers, organizations, pharmaceutical companies and government health agencies took a serious look at folkloric herbal medicines often used by Filipinos in rural areas. Research and studies by the academe, industries and government confirm the effectively of certain herbs in the treatment of diseases. Many of these herbs also proved to have health benefits in addition to their curative value. The Philippine Department of Health, after thorough evaluation and years of clinical trials have endorsed 10 herbal plants as alternative medicines for various diseases ranging from asthma, hypertension to diabetes. The 10 herbs endorsed by the Philippine Department of Health are: 1. Akapulko for fungal infections. 2. Ampalaya for diabetes. 3. Bawang for hypertension. 4. Bayabas as antiseptic. 5. Lagundi for asthma 6. Niyog-niyogan for intestinal infestation 7. Sambong as a diuretic 8. Tsaang Gubat for intestinal motility 9. Ulasimang Bato for gout 10. Yerba Buena as analgesic Caution however is advised to those who wish to try herbal medicines. A lot of research is still to be done and standards of dosage have to be established. Many of the commercially available herbal medicines are listed as supplements and have not passed the stringent standards required by the Bureau of Food and Drug Administration. Some herbal medicines also react to prescription & nonprescription drugs. Always consult your doctor before taking any herbal medicine. Author: Arnold A. Chemical Peels: Phenol, Carbolic Acid, TCA, Alphahydroxy, Beta Hydroxy

By Margaret Wommack Chemical peeling is a process whereby the skin (usually of the face) is subjected to minor chemical burning in order to make the skin healthier and younger looking. The way this works is when the skin is burned, it jump starts the healing process. So the skin is burned enough to trigger the immune and defense system but not enough that serious damage is done or that the rejuvenation only equalizes the damage. The most intense peel is done with phenol. It so damages the skin that patients must avoid sunlight for several weeks, their faces remain burned looking for longer, and sometimes require anesthesia during the procedure. However, these last much longer than other peels and dont have to be redone for a long time. Furthermore, phenol peels have the most drastic results, eliminating blotches, coarse wrinkles and pre-cancerous growths. A less severe peel is done with trichloacetic acid, known as TCA. TCA peels, unlike phenol peels, only require 10 or 12 days to recover from, rather than months. Also unlike phenol peels, people with darker skin colors can use TCA without fear of serious pigmentation affects to the skin. However, the effects of TCA are not as remarkable as those with phenol. TCA peels can smooth out fine wrinkles and scars and eliminate some blemishes, discolorations, blotches and pigmentation abnormalities, but deeper wrinkles and scars and pre-cancerous growths will be largely unaffected by trichloroacetic acid. Then, for patients looking for a lighter peel, physicians can use alphahydroxy acids to peel the skin. Rather than just one session, several sessions of alphahydroxy peels may be needed over the course of several weeks to achieve the final results. Also, they will not eliminate wrinkles.
